The Pere Marquette River is a designated National Wild and Scenic
River
covering 66 miles over four counties. It flows westerly
from Lake County, through the communities of Baldwin, Branch, Walhalla,
Custer, Scottville, and Ludington
draining into Pere Marquette
Lake and eventually Lake Michigan. The PM River is not deep
averaging
two to four feet deep and about 30-40 feet wide.
SECTIONS OF THE RIVER
The Pere Marquette Loop makes for a nice short trip. It starts at
Old US-31 in Ludington and circles near the State Road Bridge. From
there to Scottville Riverside Park, the river becomes wider with no
landings, making for a long trip. Custer Park and Indian Bridge are
two landing spots within the section between Scottville and Walhalla,
where the river is wide and deep. Starting in Walhalla, there are
three major sections: Walhalla to the Upper Branch Bridge; Upper Branch
to Bowmans Bridge and Bowmans Bridge to the M-37 Bridge
in Baldwin.
Species in the Pere Marquette River vary in the different
sections of river. The "flies" water is loaded with resident
trout ranging from 8" to 12". The Mid Section from Gleason's
to Walhalla has a good mix of bigger Trout, Steelhead, and Salmon.
The lower section, Walhalla to Scottville has the famed "Hex
Hatch" and is home to early "Kings" in late August.
The number of Chinook salmon the PM receives in late August and September
is truly amazing, with salmon reaching 30 pounds!!
Hatches on the Pere Marquette River are prolific
and offer some great Trout fishing in May, June, July and August.
The most noted are the Sulfurs, Hexigenia, Gray Drake, and several
types of Caddis. It is also one of the best "hopper and dropper"
rivers in July and August, where giant trout smash terrestrials
against the bank. The Pere Marquette River also offers some great
streamer fly fishing for trophy Brown Trout in June.

Michigan's Pere Marquette River is a world renowned fly
fishing destination for anglers in search of trophy brown trout, as well
as migratory salmon and steelhead. A barrier free, spring fed river, the
Pere Marquette flows over 150 miles from its origin east of Baldwin, Michigan
before emptying into Pere Marquette Lake which then flows into lake Michigan.
The river is named after a Jesuit missionary, father Jacques Marquette,
who spent the later portion of the 1600's exploring North America, specifically
the shoreline of west Michigan.
The Pere Marquette is a rather small river that takes
on its "switchback" appearance soon after its numerous feeder
springs emerge from the ground to form the main flow of the river. As
the river travels west toward the lake Michigan shoreline, it widens,
picking up speed and volume along the way. It is joined by other creeks,
rivers and "branches" of the main river, as it meanders west
towards the town of Ludington, Michigan. Along the way, is passes through
a mixture of meadows, deep swamp and rolling hills, with both coniferous
and deciduous trees dotting the landscape before joining Pere Marquette
Lake in Ludington, Michigan.
